Fun & Creative Wedding Day Add-Ons Couples Love

Updated: 6 days ago

As a North Carolina based wedding photographer, I’ve had the joy of documenting weddings all across the state and beyond. I truly work with some of the most fun, creative couples. I feel like every wedding I go to I leave thinking, "I love how they did/added __________, I wish I could go back in time to have that at my wedding!!”

If you’re planning your big day and looking for inspiration, here are some of my favorite fun add-ons I’ve seen couples include. These ideas not only make the celebration unforgettable for you and your guests, but they also create amazing photo opportunities.

1. Groom & Groomsmen Walk-Up Photos

Why should the bridal party have all the spotlight? I love when groomsmen make their entrance a moment to remember—walking up to the venue with all their gear, tuxedos, and plenty of excitement. It’s like their own movie moment, and it always makes for unforgettable candid photos.

2. Signature Drinks Named After Pets

If you’re a dog mom or cat dad, consider letting your furry friends be part of the big day! Couples are getting creative with customized cocktails named after their pets—like “The Luna Margarita” or “Charlie’s Old Fashioned.” Guests love it, and it’s such a fun way to make your bar menu personal.

3. Unique Getaway Cars

Your exit doesn’t have to be traditional. From vintage convertibles to brightly colored Jeeps, getaway cars are a fantastic way to end the night with flair.

4. Photobooths

As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how much guests love photobooths. They’re a fun, interactive way to give guests instant keepsakes, and they capture the playful side of your celebration. Bonus: you’ll get a copy of some fun moments that wouldn’t make it into the formal gallery.

5. Wedding Day Crossword Puzzle

Looking for a way to keep guests entertained during cocktail hour? A custom crossword puzzle filled with details about your love story is such a sweet idea. Friends and family get to laugh, share stories, and learn little facts about your relationship while you’re away taking portraits.

6. Light-Up Marquee Letters

Oversized marquee letters with your last name (or initials) make such a bold statement on the dance floor. They look amazing in photos and double as décor that can completely transform your reception space.

7. Colorful Bridal Palettes

Gone are the days of perfectly matching bridesmaid dresses. I love when couples embrace vibrant, mismatched color palettes. Whether it’s dresses, bouquets, or accessories, this trend adds depth, personality, and a beautiful pop of color to your wedding photos.

8. College Mascots at the Reception

Calling all NC State Wolfpack fans (and beyond)! Did you know some universities allow couples to request mascot appearances at their wedding? As an NC State alum, I’ve seen firsthand how much fun it is when Mr. and Mrs. Wuf crash the reception. It’s the ultimate school spirit moment and always brings big smiles.

9. Bride Dress Change for the Reception

Some of my favorite weddings have included brides switching into fun, comfortable, or sparkly dresses for the reception. It’s a great way to add variety to your photos, keep everyone comfortable for dancing, and create that “wow” factor when the party kicks off.

10. Interactive LEGO Guest Board

Last but certainly not least, one of the most creative guest activities I’ve ever seen! Instead of a traditional guest book, one couple set up a large white LEGO board with mini bride and groom figurines to represent themselves. Guests were invited to build their own LEGO characters and add them to the board. By the end of the night, it turned into a colorful, playful display full of personalities. It was not only fun for guests but also an incredible keepsake for the couple to take home.

Making Your Wedding Day Unique

The best weddings are the ones that feel like you. Whether you choose one of these ideas or come up with your own, adding creative touches is what transforms your day into a celebration that your guests—and you—will never forget.

As your North Carolina destination wedding photographer, my goal is to capture not only the big, emotional moments but also these fun, personal details that make your story one of a kind.
