When you think about your wedding day, you probably imagine the big moments — walking down the aisle, your first kiss, or that dance you’ve been practicing for weeks. But some of your favorite images may come from the in-between — the sentimental pre-ceremony moments with your parents, having fun with your wedding party, the little details you worked so hard to plan.
As a Raleigh-based wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the best galleries balance the posed must-have photos with the candid, unscripted moments.
Here are the 10 wedding photo ideas I always make sure my couples have in their final gallery — the ones that tell the full story of your day from start to finish.
1. The Getting Ready Details
Your wedding day begins long before you walk down the aisle. The getting ready photos capture the anticipation and excitement of the morning — from your dress and stationery to family heirlooms, jewelry, and perfume. These small details set the tone for your gallery and tell the story of the day’s beginning.
Pro tip: Set aside all your details in a box before I arrive so I can start the day with beautiful flatlays while you’re finishing hair and makeup.

2. The First Look (or a Private Moment Before the Ceremony)
Whether you choose a traditional first look or a private exchange of letters before the ceremony, this moment is worth remembering. It’s often when couples take their first deep breath together and realize — it’s really happening! These photos are some of the most heartfelt of the entire day.
3. Emotional Parent Moments
Don’t overlook the emotional moments with your parents or loved ones — a hug before you walk down the aisle, a shared smile, or a quiet moment of time together before the ceremony. These photos always become family favorites.
4. The Ceremony “Wide Shot”
Every wedding ceremony deserves at least one breathtaking wide shot that captures the entire scene — your guests, the setting, and the two of you at the center of it all.

5. The “Just Married” Walk
The energy right after you’re officially married is unmatched! The laughter, cheers, and happy tears — this is one of my favorite moments to capture. Walk slow, hold hands, and soak it all in while I document every second. For an extra iconic shot - stop midway down the aisle for a kiss.

6. Golden Hour Portraits
That dreamy, glowing light right before sunset is the perfect time to step away for a few quiet minutes and let the day sink in. These photos always end up being some of the ones couples enjoy sharing and framing for their home!

7. The Wedding Party Having Fun
Your wedding party photos don’t have to feel stiff or overly posed. I love capturing genuine laughter, inside jokes, and a few champagne pops to show off everyone’s personality. These shots add so much energy and joy to your final gallery.

8. Reception Entrances + Candid Reactions
The reception is where your personalities shine. Whether you’re dancing your way in or laughing with your guests mid-toast, these candid, joy-filled moments show the heart of the celebration.
9. The First Dance + Emotion-Driven Moments
Your first dance, your parents’ reactions, your friends singing along — these photos always bring your gallery to life.

10. One Last Photo of the Night
End the day with a final image that feels you. Maybe it’s a sparkler exit or a quiet moment between the two of you before the night ends. These closing shots always make the perfect last page of your wedding album.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Overthink the Shot List
While it’s great to have a few must-have photo ideas in mind, the best galleries always leave room for spontaneity. Trust your photographer’s eye — I’m constantly looking for genuine moments that can’t be scripted.
Sometimes the most beautiful images are the ones you never knew you wanted until you see them!
